FAQs
When should students arrive at school?

Students are encouraged to begin their school day at 8:00 a.m. This provides 15 minutes for morning routines and daily preparations so classes can officially begin at 8:15 a.m. A student is considered tardy at 8:20 a.m.

When does the school day end?

The school day ends at 3:05.  We ask that all parents, siblings, etc. to wait in the front lobby for your child at the end of the school day. Time is a precious learning commodity and we schedule to take advantage of every minute. Parents standing in doorways, obviously with good intentions, are still distractions to our learning plan. Thank you for your cooperation.

If a student arrives before 8:00am, where should they go?

Morning Procedures for Students

Supervision for students at school does not begin until 7:30.  To ensure students remain safe in the building at all times, we observe the following procedures at Ed White:

·  All doors to the building will remain locked prior to 7:00 am.

·  Supervision for students begins at 7:30 am in both gyms (old gym: 1st – 3rd grade, new gym: 4th-6th grade).  If students arrive prior to this time, they will be restricted to the lobby areas at the main entrance and west side of the building.

o    If students arrive prior to 7:30, we ask that parents wait with their child until they are allowed access to the rest of the building (beginning at 7:30).

·  Kindergarten story time is not scheduled to begin until closer to 7:45.  If your kindergartner arrives before 7:45 am, they should report to the old gym/cafeteria.  They will be dismissed for story time close to 7:45 am.

o    The kindergarten doors will remain locked until 7:30.

What does the traffic flow look like in the parking lot? What are the rules?

All students should be escorted by an adult or safety patrol officer when crossing the parking lot.

Are there rules for students arriving or departing by foot or bicycle?

Students who are walking or riding bicycles, scooters, or skateboards need to use the crosswalks when at school. They need to remember to walk their bicycle, scooter, or skateboard when they are on a North Scott Campus.

What if my child will be absent from school?

If your child will be absent for any reason, please call the school nurse at 285-3303. If there is no answer, please leave a message. If the absence is due to an illness, please state any symptoms your child has. Students must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

Do I need to stop in the office when visiting during the school day?

Yes. Although parents are always welcome at Ed White, we ask that all visitors enter through the front door, register in the main office, and wear an identification badge. All Edward White employees wear similar ID badges.

In light of the unfortunate recent events and in a continued effort to increase the safety of our children, Ed White is implementing new security measures.

As in the past, all volunteers and visitors will be required to sign in. At the time of sign in, volunteers and visitors will be assigned a badge with a number, this badge will need to be returned at the end of the visit and recorded on the log in sheet.

If you are coming in the building before the lobby doors are locked (ie, if you come in to drop your child off and plan on staying), you are still required to stop in the office prior to proceeding to your classroom assignment. The lobby doors will be locked at 8:05am – 3:05pm.

Any and all homework, snow gear, lunches, messages, etc. will be delivered by the office staff only. This will help lessen interruptions and ensure continuous study in our classrooms.

It is in all of our best interest that we work together to ensure the safety and education of our children. The staff at Ed White appreciates your cooperation in this matter.

What if I need to get my child out of school early?

Please send a note to your child’s teacher or call the office and the message will be relayed to your child’s teacher.

What if my child needs to go a different way after school?

Please send a note to your child’s teacher or call the office and the message will be relayed to your child’s teacher.

If my child needs to use the phone during the day, is there one available?

Students may use their classroom phone or the office phone after getting permission from their teacher or a secretary. School phones are only to be used when absolutely necessary and are not to be used for making after school play dates.

Can I eat lunch with my child?

Yes. If you are going to eat lunch with your child, and would like to order a hot lunch, please contact the office by 8:15 a.m. so we can get an accurate hot lunch count. Adults generally sit with their child at a designated table.

Lunch schedules:

  • K-1 10:55-11:25
  • 2-3  11:25-11:55
  • 4-5  11:55-12:25
Can my child bring birthday treats to school?

Yes.Treats must be commercially pre-packaged (sanitary) choices. Additionally, we ask that these selections avoid foods heavy in sugars and fats, but instead focus on nutritionally “healthy snacks” when at all possible. The North Scott School District is sensitive to the needs of students with allergies and will maintain a “Peanut /Tree nut Conscious” policy at each elementary school. In addition, school office personnel will monitor all birthday treats and classroom snacks before they are forwarded to the classroom. No homemade treats will be distributed to students for birthdays and special occasions.

Where is the Lost and Found

It is located near the lobby. Please label all your child’s belongings.

What is PCL?

PCL is Partners in Comprehensive Literacy Program

Edward White has been accepted into the Partnership In Comprehensive Ed White Elementary Literacy Program. This program is a joint effort between The University of Arkansas--Little Rock, The University of Northern Iowa, Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency and North Scott Schools, to improve the quality of literacy education for all students.

The program is being "rolled out" at Ed White Elementary, and will be implemented in all elementary buildings, the junior high and high school in the coming years. It is based on the work of Dr. Linda Dorn and Carla Soffos of Arkansas.

The PCL Logo of interlocking diamonds symbolizes the dynamic, continuous relationship between school literacy programs and the educational agencies and policies that influence school improvement.

The first diamond represents the relationship of four essential components within the learning system: Core classroom literacy components, School embedded professional development, Interventions for struggling learners, Accountability and research.

The second diamond represents the relationship between educational agencies: School Systems, University College of Education, State Board of Education, State Legislation.
