Having a Successful Year

Having a Successful Year

August 23, 2016

Welcome back to the 2016-17 school year! Students, teachers, staff and parents are excited about the new school year and have high hopes for each student to have a successful one. I believe there are a number of key things to help ensure your child will have a great year.

Good attendance is one of the keys to success. A North Scott district goal is to increase our student and staff attendance rates. Students who do not miss school are more successful than students who do miss. It is important for parents to establish the expectation for good attendance. We encourage parents to schedule appointments outside of the school day whenever possible.

Students who get involved in different activities in school outperform students who do not. We would like to see all of our students involved in some type of activity. This could be a sport, club, fine arts, or volunteerism. We know that when students have multiple connections to school, they will work harder to be successful. Our athletics and activities teach lifelong lessons.

Parents and teachers need to be partners in the education of our children. When all of us are on the same page, we can best meet the needs of our students. When issues arise, I encourage parents to contact the staff member most directly involved. Too many times parents avoid talking with staff because they don’t want things to get worse. We are truly working for what is best for students, so that will never happen. When problems are ignored, they become worse. Please be proactive for your child and form a partnership with your child’s teachers.

Parents can do several things in the home to help promote success at school. I would encourage parents set up a consistent routine for homework. Students need help being organized. Students need plenty of sleep, no matter what their age. They also need to start their day out with breakfast. If students are not eating at home, all of our schools offer breakfast.

We are very excited to start a new and successful year at North Scott!
